With two of the best defenses in the nation, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9) and Stanford Cardinal (14) are ready to play what promises to be a low-scoring affair.

With so many important games in college football, especially in the SEC, points will likely be flying up onto the scoreboard. Not between the Irish and the Cardinal, the latter of which is giving up 11.5 points per game and former a nation-best of 6.5.

The FBS-Independent Notre Dame has looked impressive with Everett Golson back under center, but their defense has been the story of the season. However, Stanford is their first ranked opponent this year and still to come are Florida State (1) and USC (16).

"We really focus on what we need to do to get better," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly told reporters Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. "We turned the ball over. We gave up some big plays on the perimeter. We focus a lot more on that stuff than the bigger picture issues.

"We are not an experienced group and if we sway too far from working on getting out of our breaks and taking a direct snap, because we may fumble it, we're going to be in trouble. So that's where I really have to stay as a task master when it comes to those details."

While Notre Dame's offense has looked better this season, no team in college football is giving up fewer points than Stanford and that has led them to being slight favorites. It is just the second time a road team has been favored in Notre Dame Stadium since 2011, the AP reported, so the Irish will be keen to defend their turf.
