The Ole Miss athletic department is under investigation for suspected violations of NCAA rules in multiple different sports, though they have not yet received an official Notice of Allegations.
First reported by Yahoo Sports, University of Mississippi athletic director Ross Bjork confirmed the investigation Wednesday, saying the school "is working with the NCAA." Ole Miss also does not have a hearing scheduled with the NCAA Committee of Infractions.
Unnamed sources told Yahoo Sports the investigation is centered on the football and women's basketball teams, with the majority of the alleged violations committed by the latter. The sources also said third-year Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze is not in any sort of potential trouble and the accusations against the team come from members of a past staff.
Yahoo Sports learned that the next NCAA Infractions hearing will be in Oct., from the 16th to the 18th. Sources said Ole Miss is not scheduled on the agenda.
Still, the timing of the new report is interesting itself because both the Alabama and Texas A&M football teams are coming in to play Ole Miss and Mississippi St., respectively. In all, four of the SEC's eight ranked teams will playing in state just hours apart.
In 2012, Ole Miss announced the dismissal of their head women's basketball coach Adrian Wiggins along with two members of his staff. Wiggins and the staffers stood accused of improper recruiting contact with prospective student-athletes. The team also had two transfer student-athletes who did not meet the NCAA's transfer eligibility qualifications.
Yahoo Sports' sources said the investigation is not bringing forth any new allegations and all interviews are complete. Bjork and Ole Miss have no choice now but to wait and see what the NCAA Department of Enforcement does next.
