The South Carolina Gamecocks (13) have won three straight since losing their season opener, but the defense will need to play better than it has when hosting the Missouri Tigers Saturday night.

Missouri has boasted an offense thus far that should make the South Carolina defense worry, especially given their offensive point totals allowed to SEC opponents this season. Three of the Gamecocks four games have been within the SEC and they allowed 52 points in the loss to Texas A&M, 35 in a win over Georgia and 34 in last week's win over Vanderbilt.

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier was not thrilled with his team's most recent win, calling his team's performance "embarrassing" despite putting up 48 points.

"We still believe we have a chance to have a good team this year. We're 3-1 and have won some close ones," Spurrier told reporters later on, the Associated Press reported, his frustration subsiding. "We've played some pretty good teams. We didn't think Vandy was going to be that good, but they played their hearts out. Probably out-played us. Probably out-hustled us in a lot of areas."

Led by sophomore quarterback Maty Mauk, Missouri is averaging 38 points per game while South Carolina is allowing an average of 36. Mauk has thrown for nearly 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns, so he could represent a big problem for the opposing defense.

However, South Carolina has bested Missouri twice in the two years since joining the SEC, so the Tigers are looking to get one back.

"We're aware of that. I know that we're going to come out and we're going to give them our best game," Missouri quarterback said. "We can't take them lightly. Obviously, they're a very good football team that can do a lot of things."
