iPhone 6 'Bendgate': Apple Says its New Handsets Were Designed to Withstand Stress Fractures, Bending 'Extremely Rare'
ByNow that Apple has issued a fix to the glitchy iOS 8.0.1 update, the company has turned its attention to "bendgate."
According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has said bent iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets has been "extremely rare." The new iPhones are already one of Apple's most popular smartphones.
But what makes them so popular - their increased screen size and thinner frame - apparently made them susceptible to bending. A few YouTube videos may have exaggerated the matter, as Apple has said they have fielded nine complaints for bending since their release one week ago.
Apple said they equipped their new iPhones with a particularly tough grade of anodized aluminum to address the extra-thin frame. Apple also said they accounted for high stress fractures with various structural features, the company told the Verge in a statement.
"Our iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature a precision engineered unibody enclosure constructed from machining a custom grade of 6000 series anodized aluminum, which is tempered for extra strength," Apple said. "They also feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. We chose these high-quality materials and construction very carefully for their strength and durability."
Apple is trying to weather two storms in their two major releases: two new iPhones and a new mobile operating system. Apple seems poised to salvage their year with impending releases of new iPads and a new desktop operating system.
"We also perform rigorous tests throughout the entire development cycle including 3-point bending, pressure point cycling, sit, torsion, and user studies. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use," Apple said. "With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus. As with any Apple product, if you have questions please contact Apple."
