Kira Kazantsev, who was recently crowned Miss America 2015, admitted that she partook in hazing sorority pledges at Hofstra University, but said most of the allegations against her are "just not true."

Kazantsev responded to an exclusive report from Jezebel in an interview on Good Morning America. An unnamed source told the website that Kazantsev made pledges lives "a living hell" by verbally assaulting them and requiring tasks that left them bruised and exhausted.

On GMA, she said that "under the broad definition of hazing," she is in fact guilty, though she outlined what exactly it was she was guilty of. She said she was hazed when she was a freshman at Hofstra and wanted to fit in and be accepted somewhere, so she joined the Alpha Phi sorority.

"That was the culture of the university," Kazantsev said. "I was brought up through the organization thinking that was appropriate behavior.

"Today, I understand that's just not true."

Specifically, she said she drilled pledged on their knowledge of the sorority and required "menial tasks" of them such as "all-night crafting." Jezebel's source said the allegations of hazing led the sorority to remove Kazantsev, who was their Recruitment Committee President at the time.

On GMA, Kazantsev said Alpha Phi dismissed her in April, 2013 from her from the sorority because she "made a joke... that was taken out of context" in an email. Her joke? She said "we would make the evening scary for pledges." But the event she was asked to organize never took place.

She went on to address the issue at length on her personal blog.

"The email was forwarded by someone to the national organization. Based on that information, the national office summoned me for a judiciary hearing. At the time, it was the end of the school year," she wrote. "Finals, graduation, and moving to New York City were at the forefront of my concerns. Based on the fact that I did not attend this hearing that was the official reason given for my termination."
