Ben & Jerry's Urged to Rename 'Hazed and Confused' Flavor
ByIce Cream maker Ben & Jerry's is considering changing the name of one of its flavors after an anti-hazing group said it makes light of a deadly problem on college campuses, Bloomberg News reported.
"Hazed & Confused," which debuted in February, is a blend of hazelnut and chocolate ice cream.
A couple, whose 19-year-old son died in a hazing incident in 2008, noticed an ad for the ice cream and sent an email to Ben & Jerry's on Sept. 5, more than six months after the flavor was released.
"I just paused and I was shocked and we were dismayed," Lianne Kowiak, an anti-hazing activist who speaks to students and families about the dangers of hazing, told Bloomberg News. "I was just upset about it."
Her son, Harrison Kowiak, died of a head injury back in 2008 during a fraternity "hell week" hazing ritual at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C. The Kowiak family sued for wrongful death and won an out-of-court settlement.
However, Sean Greenwood, a spokesman for Ben & Jerry's, said the moniker is not a reference to hazing, but instead plays on hazelnuts and the phrase -- which is also the title of a popular 1993 Richard Linklater film -- "dazed and confused."
Hank Nuwer, and anti-hazing activist, urged readers of sopthazing.org to contact the ice cream company with their complaints. Greenwood told Bloomberg News that the company only received three emails, but it will consider a name-change anyway.
"You hear about things like institutional racism and people will say, 'You can't see it because you are living in it, you were raised in it, you were born in it,'" Greenwood said. "This in no way was in reference to hazing at Ben & Jerry's, but were we doing something that we should have been more aware of?"
Greenwood said the company is trying to learn from this situation.
