The USC Trojans (14) and Stanford Cardinal (13) are likely playing one of their toughest Pac-12 matchups of the season though its only week two.

The Trojans have UCLA to compete with for the Pac-12 South and the Cardinal has Oregon in the North. The Pac-12 also has other fringe competitors, making it one of this year's most competitive Power Five conferences.

USC's newly hired head football coach, Steve Sarkisian, moved from the Pac-12 North to the South. While at Washington, he played David Shaw and the Cardinal annually, but did not fare well against him, losing four of five. Last year, he called Shaw's team out for flopping to slow down Washington's hurry-up offense.

Any lingering animosity between the coaches (and not just from last season) is apparently gone.

"I think, first of all, I have a great deal of respect for David as a coach and as a person," Sarkisian told reporters before Saturday's game, according to ESPN. "We had a disagreement in the heat of the moment and I think both of us have moved on. We've seen each other on different occasions since then. We were actually in Hawaii together at an event. We haven't spoken on it and I think our relationship is fine. We've moved on."

Also addressing the media, Shaw said much of the same is true for him.

"It was over," the fourth-year Cardinal coach said. "It was in the past. He and I sat together at lunch and breakfast a couple times and talked about a bunch of other things. Our wives are getting to become good friends; they know each other well so there's no animosity whatsoever."

Still, it is a conference matchup and these two teams could theoretically play for the Pac-12 title, so their old animosity might be out, but new squabbles may be on the way.
