The University of Arizona recently will launch a new car sharing program for students, faculty and staff this fall, school officials announced.

The Tucson-based institution and Zipcar, Inc., a car-sharing network that is an alternative to traditional car rental and car ownership, are collaborating to provide a "sustainable and cost-effective alternative to car ownership on campus," KVOA News reported.

Zipcar is a for-profit car rental company providing automobile reservations to its members, billable by the hour or day.

Six vehicles, featuring models such as Ford Focus, Toyota Prius and Volkswagen Jetta, will be initially offered to those associated with the university. The vehicles will be located in several spots around campus including Lot 5162 Circle in front of the Coronado Hall, in the Second Street Garage and on Olive Road near Second Street.

Android and iPhone users can make reservations using the Zipcar mobile app. They could also use it to lock and unlock vehicles, "and honk the horn to help locate the vehicle"

Beginning in fall 2014, University of Arizona members can join the program for $25, "with rates for Zipcar vehicles on campus starting at $7.50 per hour and $69 per day, KVOA News reported. However, they will get $35 in free driving, saving $10.

After the first year, members will have to pay an annual membership fee of $35. Zipcar rates include gas, insurance, a reserved parking spot, and up to 180 miles of driving per day.
