FIBA World Cup 2014: Team USA Roster Cuts Expose Thin Front Court, Backcourt to Be the Saving Grace?
ByWith so many NBA superstars on one international team, it will be impossible for USA basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski to fit all his All-Stars onto the final 12-man squad.
According to ESPN, Team USA has narrowed its roster down to 16 after the latest round of cuts. Before the team heads to Spain on Aug. 23 for the FIBA World Cup, Krzyzewski and his staff will have to trim four more players.
The Americans are likely to be light on big men, especially since Kevin Love and Blake Griffin removed themselves from the team on their own. Love is at the center of trade talks between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Minnesota Timberwolves, the team that drafted him in 2008. Love also has international experience, as he played on the U.S. 2010 FIBA championship team and the Gold Medal squad in the 2012 London Olympics.
Team USA froze briefly last Friday as they watched Paul George, arguably their best small forward with Kevin Durant at power forward, suffer a gruesome leg injury. His surgery was reportedly a great success, but he will have a long road back to the court.
The good news: team USA's backcourt looks devastatingly talented, so good that John Wall and Bradley Beal were among those recently cut. Joining them was power forward Paul Milsap.
ESPN reported that guards Derrick Rose, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, James Harden and Klay Thompson are all considered "locks" to make the final roster. "On the bubble" is sharp shooters Damian Lillard and Kyle Korver.
The front court will get a boost from Kevin Durant at power forward, though it is clearly an offensive decision. Also a lock at that position is Kenneth Farried. Team USA should be relying heavily on Anthony Davis in the rebounding and blocking departments, as he is easily one of the team's best defenders. Other centers vying for a spot are DeMarcus Cousins, Mason Plumlee and Andre Drummond.
Due to George's injury, the small forward position is wide open to Chandler Parsons, DeMar DeRozan and Gordon Hayward.
