Virginia opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning Monday night, scoring two runs, but disaster struck in the third. In the top of the inning, Vanderbilt registered all of their nine runs, with seven different hitters tallying at least an RBI. Tyler Campbell delivered the big blow, with a double to bring in three runs.
Virginia still battled and scored three runs in the bottom of the third, two in the fifth and one in the eighth, losing 9-8.
"We're fortunate to win that game, for sure," Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin told the Associated Press. "No one could have scripted that particular game, and if anyone said they could, they're lying. I don't think you could have called a nine-run inning."
Campbell continues to be an improbable success for Vanderbilt as he continues to fill in for Xavier Turner, who was ruled ineligible by the NCAA for a rules violation.
Virginia starter Nathan Kirby had a good start to his game, but he said he lost his release point in the third, leading to Vanderbilt's big inning. Of the last 50 pitches he threw in his outing, 31 were out of the strike zone and runners driven in after being issued a walk proved to be fatal for the Cavaliers.
"We didn't really want to fall back and pack it in," Virginia second baseman Branden Cogswell told the AP of his team's near-comeback. "We hadn't done it all year. This is the championship series, and there is no reason to do it now."
