Joel Embiid has a stress fracture in his right foot and will undergo surgery to repair it Friday, likely removing his status as the favorite to be the number one overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Arn Tellem, Embiid's agent, confirmed to ESPN the seven-foot center's injury status and the need for immediate surgery. Tellem said the nature of Embiid's injury will prevent him from flying, meaning he cannot attend the draft June 26 in New York.

"Joel Embiid suffered a stress fracture to the navicular bone in his right foot," Tellem said Thursday. "He is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow. Joel will be unable to participate in any additional workouts, and will not attend the draft in New York. We will have no further comment until after the surgery."

Tellem told ESPN's Andy Katz earlier that day Embiid suffered the injury the previous week, but did not discuss any details. Tellem still did not discuss how or when Embiid hurt his foot.

The former Kansas Jayhawk center dealt with back trouble toward the end of his one and only season in college basketball. Embiid, a surprise breakout star from Cameroon, impressed evaluators during pre-draft workouts, but the new injury is raising concerns about his durability.

After averaging 11 points, eight rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game, Embiid quickly became a highly intriguing NBA prospect. However, ESPN basketball expert Chad Ford updated his mock draft to drop Embiid from going first overall to the Cleveland Cavaliers next week.

Ford predicted the Cavs would take Andrew Wiggins, with Jabari Parker going to the Milwaukee Bucks, Dante Exum to the Philadelphia 76ers and Embiid to the Orlando Magic.

Chris Mannix, an NBA insider for Sports Illustrated, said on CBS Sports' "Morning Show" that the Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has a win-now mentality. Therefore, he will not want to pick Embiid only to wait for him to recover. Mannix even went so far as to suggest Embiid could fall out of the top 10 picks.
