Eduardo Acuna-Zumbado, a 44-year-old former Missouri State University professor, is facing charges for secretly capturing photos of men undressing in two campus locker rooms.
The assistant Spanish professor in the modern and classical languages department was seen Jan 10 taking photos of a man in various stages of undress inside the men's locker room at the Foster Recreation Center.
Springfield police said that they discovered more locker room photos on his cellphone. Prosecutors said that the photos of partially undressed men seemed to have taken without the person's approval. The victims were different from the Jan. 10 encounter, BND.com reports.
Acuna-Zumba is charged with second-degree invasion of privacy, a class A misdemeanour. If found guilty, he might be sentenced to one year jail-term and a fine of not more than $1,000. A bond of $2,500 is set, provided he stays out of the campus.
During police interrogation, Acuna-Zumbado admitted to taking photos of men 'partially nude or fully nude' to experience the thrill of it. He said that he deleted the photos as soon as he took them, KSDK reports.
Acuna-Zumbado started working at MSU from August 18, 2008 until March 3. Officials declined to reveal whether the faculty member voluntarily resigned or was fired. Acuna-Zumbado was previously suspended with pay following the filing of the charge Jan. 30, according to a University spokeswoman, KY3 reports.
Acuna-Zumbado holds a bachelor's degree from National University of Costa Rica 1991; master's degrees from the University of Kansas and University of Illinois and a doctoral degree in Latin American Literature from the University of Kansas 2008.
