University of Colorado Boulder has named Steven Hayward as its first visiting scholar of Conservative Thought and Policy for fall and spring semesters, 2013-14.

Hayward, a Thomas W. Smith Distinguished Fellow at the Ashbrook Center, Ashland University, will begin his one-year appointment this fall.

Hayward is scheduled to teach four undergraduate courses in political science, Constitutional Law, American Political Thought, environmental studies and Free-Market Environmentalism.

In addition, he will also be encouraged to initiate public events among the campus community.

"Good teaching should make all students, of whatever disposition, better thinkers," Hayward said. "In the humanities, this should be done by considering fairly the full range of perspectives on a subject. That's the way I intend to conduct classes while I am visiting at the university, and I hope that students of every kind of opinion will feel welcome in my classroom."

Hayward earned his Ph.D. degree in American Studies from Claremont Graduate School.

Hayward has also penned a book, 'A Biblical Perspective on Humans and the Natural World', which was published in 2010 and written essays that have appeared in The Washington Post, National Review and Weekly Standard among other publications.

CU-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano said that his professional expertise on subjects such as energy, environment and the U.S. Constitution will lead to interesting and in-depth analysis, debate, discourse and critical thinking among the students, which further improves their academic community."

The Conservative Thought and Policy is a three-year inaugural program that is maintained by private funds. So far, donors have collectively raised around $1 million.

One of the donors, Denver banker Earl Wright, told Gawker that students need to understand a conservative, free-enterprise approach to public policy, which is underrepresented on the campus.
