Activists At 'Fat Justice' Event Accuse Ronald Reagan, Medical Professionals Of Oppressing Fat People
ByFeminist activists blamed Ronald Reagan and medical professionals for the suffering of fat people during a fat justice workshop at Swarthmore College, Campus Reform reported.
Feminist activist Cora Segal and self-identified "angry, man-hating lesbian," Nicole Sullivan, sought to address "the ongoing exploitation and oppression of fat people" at their "Fat Justice and Feminism" seminar, Campus Reform reported.
"From the war on obesity to the rise of deadly bariatric surgery, there is an unprecedented attack on fat bodies," the feminist organizers said in the event's description. "This workshop [aimed to] map out the focal points of this oppression, while delving into the complex history of white supremacy and misogyny that created it."
According to the Swarthmore Independent, an independent publication at Swarthmore College, Segal and Sullivan said former President Ronald Reagan "fucked everything up for fat people. " However, there was "[n]o specific evidence about Reagan's perverse policies or animosity toward obese people was offered," the Swarthmore Independent reported.
They also took aim at medical professionals, saying that "every physician is bought off by lobbyists and the diet industry.
"There is no scientific consensus whatsoever that fat people need to exercise more, or that fat is unhealthy. There is no evidence that [being] fat causes diabetes. Medical professionals are informed of this so-called knowledge by lobbying groups," the pair argued.
They also said that BMI is a useless metric that was created by a "white, male, French astronomer," Adolphe Quetelet, who they said was also a white supremacist.
They also argued in favor of "communism and socialism as viable alternatives to capitalism and exploitation" and against oppressive healthy eating and exercise programs.
The workshop was funded by the Women's Resource Center, Dean Karen Henry, History Department, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Interpretation Theory, and the Worth Health Center.
