Johnny Manziel's Nike Deal Believed to Be Largest in 2014 Rookie Class, 'Johnny Football' Gear on the Way?
ByPretty soon, we could see "Johnny Football" on a pair of Nike cleats now that the former Texas A&M Aggie quarterback has officially inked a lucrative contract with the athletic wear company.
Nike spokesman KeJuan Wilkins confirmed the deal to ESPN Thursday night, but would not disclose the terms of the deal. Sources said the agreement is for multiple years and is the largest for any member of this year's rookie class.
Johnny Manziel reportedly informed Nike he chose them over bids from companies like Adidas, Under Armour and New Balance. With marketing rights to Manziel, Nike may soon start using "Johnny Football" on its gear. A College Station, Texas, company currently has an application in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office claiming the phrase does not refer to a living person. Manziel is contesting that application.
Negotiating the Nike deal was Maverick Carter, LeBron James' business manager, and Fenway Sports Group. Manziel recently agreed to join LRMR, the marketing firm James owns.
Manziel will now join a class of quarterbacks signed with Nike like Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Colin Kaepernick. He is also joining a much larger class of athletes who are signed with Nike, like Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, Manny Pacquaio and, of course, Michael Jordan.
Draft experts see Manziel being taken within the first five picks, which would all mean a lucrative professional contract. With the first pick, the Houston Texans are considering Manziel, but so are the Jacksonville Jaguars with the third pick and the Cleveland Browns with the fourth pick.
Manziel said last month he was trying to leave "Johnny Football" behind because it represents a part of him that partied too hard and distracted him from football. He previously told the Houston Chronicle, during a pre-draft workout with QB guru George Whitfield Jr., that the Texans would be mistaken to not take him.
With Nike likely wanting to push the "Johnny Football" moniker, Manziel will have to figure out a way to act professional while still embracing the nickname.
