Several college campuses were closed Monday after a chemical fire broke out on the roof of a BioLab plant in Conyers, Georgia, on Sunday.

According to Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel, a sprinkler system malfunctioned inside the facility, which seems to have mixed with chemicals to cause a plume.

Georgia Piedmont Technical College's Newton and Rockdale campuses announced they would be closed until further notice.

Meanwhile, Emory University's Oxford College, which is located just six miles away from the plant, told students there was "no immediate threat to the campus," according to the Emory Wheel, and to check back for updates regarding shuttle service.

"As a precaution, individuals may want to limit their activity outdoors, close any windows and doors, and turn off air conditioning and other ventilation systems. The university remains in contact with local and state officials and will provide any additional guidance as needed," the university said in a statement.

Residents and businesses were ordered to evacuate the area surrounding the BioLab plant. A shelter-in-place advisory is in effect for approximately 90,000 individuals in Rockdale County.

Jonatan Levi Quintero told the Emory Wheel that he was disturbed by the scenario, citing the BioLab plant's other accidents in 2016 and 2020.

"I just really hope that the wind and weather do not blow any of these chemicals into Oxford," he said.
