"Giving people a source directly from academia is really important," Gertler emphasizes. Access to information is often restricted by paywalls, and the content is typically presented in a manner that is too complex for the general public to grasp or find engaging.

The launch of LuFlot Bot surpassed all expectations, with 11,000 queries from over 85 countries within just two weeks. This widespread interest highlights a growing global curiosity and concern regarding the ethics of AI, a topic that is becoming increasingly relevant in our technology-driven world. Gertler expressed surprise at the widespread global reach of the technology, highlighting the impact of removing barriers to access.

Floridi sees this as a positive sign of the public's interest in understanding AI ethics. "You never know if people are really interested in this topic," he remarks, reflecting on his earlier advice to Gertler. "Apparently they are."

Looking Ahead: The Future of AI Education

Gertler and Floridi's collaboration represents a larger trend within higher education institutions. Many universities, including Harvard University, Washington University, and the University of California, have started creating their own internal large language models (LLMs) for various purposes, including AI education.

While not every professor may have the resources to create their own chatbots based on their teachings, the success of LuFlot Bot serves as a testament to the potential of integrating AI technology into education. As Gertler suggests, professors could use their existing class materials to create similar bots, making learning more accessible and engaging for students.

"This project is symbolic of what can be done in a relatively quick timeline to create a safe, secure, and accessible chatbot," Gertler explains. "Think of the possibility of what if professors can create similar bots."
