Yale Freshman Creates AI Chatbot on AI Ethics, Surpasses Expectations

By

In the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) development, one Yale University freshman, Nicolas Gertler, has defied expectations and captured global attention with his innovative AI chatbot.

This chatbot, named LuFlot Bot, focuses specifically on the ethics, philosophies, and uses of AI, offering a unique and specialized perspective in a sea of more generalized AI models.

A Humble Beginning: From Curiosity to Creation

Gertler's journey into the world of AI began five years ago, when, at the age of 14, he started tinkering with artificial intelligence out of sheer curiosity and a love for technology. His passion for AI continued to grow, leading him to deploy his first AI chatbot last fall, during his freshman year at Yale. This initial chatbot served as a study guide for his cognitive science class midterm test, built from lecture slides and study guides to simulate exam-like questions.
"I just saw it as a really cool experiment," Gertler reflects on his early foray into AI development. Little did he know that this experiment would eventually evolve into something much larger and impactful.

A Meeting of Minds: Collaboration with Professor Luciano Floridi

The turning point came when Gertler shared his chatbot project with Professor Luciano Floridi, a Yale professor renowned for his work in digital ethics. Floridi, the founding director at Yale's Digital Ethics Center and a respected philosopher, was instantly intrigued by Gertler's work. Their collaboration led to the development of LuFlot Bot, a chatbot dedicated to educating users on the complex and nuanced ethics of AI.

Floridi saw an opportunity to bridge the digital divide that often separates academia from the general public. Many advanced AI models, like ChatGPT, are subscription-based and can be inaccessible to those without the means to pay. LuFlot Bot, however, is free for anyone to use, offering a valuable resource directly from academia to a wider audience.

"Giving people a source directly from academia is really important," Gertler emphasizes. Access to information is often restricted by paywalls, and the content is typically presented in a manner that is too complex for the general public to grasp or find engaging.

Beyond Expectations: Global Reach and Impact

The launch of LuFlot Bot surpassed all expectations, with 11,000 queries from over 85 countries within just two weeks. This widespread interest highlights a growing global curiosity and concern regarding the ethics of AI, a topic that is becoming increasingly relevant in our technology-driven world. Gertler expressed surprise at the widespread global reach of the technology, highlighting the impact of removing barriers to access.

Floridi sees this as a positive sign of the public's interest in understanding AI ethics. "You never know if people are really interested in this topic," he remarks, reflecting on his earlier advice to Gertler. "Apparently they are."

Looking Ahead: The Future of AI Education

Gertler and Floridi's collaboration represents a larger trend within higher education institutions. Many universities, including Harvard University, Washington University, and the University of California, have started creating their own internal large language models (LLMs) for various purposes, including AI education.

While not every professor may have the resources to create their own chatbots based on their teachings, the success of LuFlot Bot serves as a testament to the potential of integrating AI technology into education. As Gertler suggests, professors could use their existing class materials to create similar bots, making learning more accessible and engaging for students.

"This project is symbolic of what can be done in a relatively quick timeline to create a safe, secure, and accessible chatbot," Gertler explains. "Think of the possibility of what if professors can create similar bots."

Nicolas Gertler's journey from curiosity to creation serves as an inspiring example of the power of innovation and collaboration in the field of AI. LuFlot Bot stands as a testament to the potential of AI technology to educate and engage a global audience on the important ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence. As AI continues to advance, initiatives like LuFlot Bot pave the way for a more informed and ethically conscious approach to AI development and implementation.
